A finishable workflow

Sorry for the absence this month! I've been almost buried by frustrations of failed attempts. This week I finally got a result which seems finishable and I want to make a quick WIP post of it.

I twitted an earlier version 2 days ago:

And mentioned that I was adapting to a new workflow: doing sketching/shading/rendering at the same time. To be more specific, starting as a very rough sketch, then painting above the sketch, and while painting I still constantly switched to sketching/shading by creating new layers. If I'm happy with the process, all layers will be merged into one, and then repeat.

Surprisingly by this method, not only I'm gaining much more flexibility of painting, but also I don't need to heavily rely on references because all errors are highly fixable and the result still remains controllable. All I use for this work so far are 2 small heads & 2 anatomy figures on my desk. Anyway, I'll keep finishing this work before the end of this month!

Yeah they are probably very used to this method, or this workflow just matches their preference of painting. I guess it utilizes the biggest benefit of CG workflow: you can modify everything at anytime. But I somehow need tons of time to adapt to it 😅

I have seen artists who use this method while streaming and I feel that they are just super relaxed when they paint? They seem to do everything by instinct and they don't worry too much about the technicalities of the drawing.

I'm guessing this kind of workflow is used mostly by concept artists. I still have some doubts about this approach, but the values and lighting work so much better this way. It took me years to adjust my habit haha, and I can totally feel your pain if not starting by drawing a thorough sketch😔 I also using some small tricks to help me not being lost in the painting process, which I plan to discuss in the next process post😉

This sounds really advanced! I find that my workflow works best when I have everything sketched out thoroughly because I tend to get lost in the more painterly environment OTL However I should definitely try something out of my comfort zone TvT It's awesome to see you developing new approaches, can't wait to see more of it! <3
