AJ Styles vs John Cena MITB 2016

When exactly is the "Super Cena Era" ?

Watch: https://streamable.com/9xsxsf

Comments

To echo what others said, Cena won 95% of the time which I think is why his losses are so memorable. I believe in 2K23 the Showcase mode focused on big Cena losses, which were few and far between over the years.

Super Cena era was probably 2008-2014 That was his height as Super Cena

Keep in mind as you watch all these matches where Cena takes the L that these are rare blips in time. By the mid 2010s it was much more common to see him lose, but from 2005 to 2014, Cena was inescapably the guy. Time after time, talent would be built up strong only to lose to Cena in the most frustrating and repetitive way. We watched as the guys we liked got over in spite of the company doing everything in their power to hold them back. And then once they were on the precipice of greatness, they fell to the five moves of doom. Usually it was about protecting his character and marketability, with kids and stuff y'know. But it alienated fans who wanted new stars and better stories. Cena's best matches are the ones he lost because whenever he won, it was more or less the same--cenawinslol.

. the DANIMAL .

He was the ace , never a leader of bullet club

Diruroru

When you say he's a cartoon character that's why we didn't like him at the time especially when you have people like AJ or dbry showing that there's so much better

Diruroru

So cool to see AJ come to wwe to have this match as a starter , cena said win a lot but these are the later matches where I guess he didn't win lol

Diruroru

After watching this you have to watch their summer slam 2016 match and later their royal rumble 2017 match. Those 2 are even better than this.

David

You're seeing the exceptions to the rule in Cena's run, not the more typical Cena matches.

Adam Nelson

Yeah, because if there's a strike that clearly misses from any angle other than what the viewers saw, they need to know whether they need to sell it as though it connected or missed. Also need to not spoil run ins etc if they can't be seen on screen yet

Charlie

The bullet train line was a reference to the bullet club, which AJ was the leader for a time before WWE. And the gesture that AJ did at the end was the 'too sweet' which the bullet club use. I think Cody may have tried to too sweet AJ recently at one of their press conferences, as he was a member after AJ joined WWE.

U should react to Seth Rollins vs Roman reigns 2016

There’s actually a couple good reasons the commentators look at the monitors instead of the ring. The biggest one is so they don’t call anything the camera didn’t see. Think back to Clash at the Castle. The commentators could obviously see that the second ref that slid in during the main event was CM Punk, but they didn’t say anything until the cameras saw it so that the surprise wasn’t ruined.

super cena was from like 2006 to 2014, during that era he never lost clean. Its a big reason cena didnt face undertaker at WM when they were in their prime. Both were basically invincible, and both never lost clean so it was either ending the streak or breaking cenas superhero image

Jayshawn Robinson

The hat is iconic but the headband has just as much character too

''Watch Me Whip Watch Me'' Nanae Takahashi

Well, also during super cena's run he either won or didn't lose clean. Rarely he would lose clean.

Christopher Barnes

Oh cool didn’t see this was uploaded. Nice. Hoping you do two more Josh (just so mine gets watched lol). Their SummerSlam match two months later is even better.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

It's just the way John Cena does the STF that makes it look bad. Even Stone Cold Steve Austin told him to tighten it up. There are other wrestlers who done the move and it looks fine.

Christopher Barnes

That's correct they need to be able to see exactly what we see

Drew Or Die

I think the announcers look at the monitors instead of the action in front of them because it shows the feed of what gets shown on tv/ppv so they can call the action more accurately. I heard that before, but not 100 percent sure though.

Christopher Barnes

I remember going into this match expecting Aj to get absolutely squashed because he was basically Mr TNA and Vince hated to push characters he didn't have a hand in creating. I don't know how AJ was able to get stay on Vince's good side but i am so glad he did

Drew Or Die

Yes the looking at the monitors is weird. It was a Vince thing

Wilson Simons

That match was the definition of suplex city lol

Optilliam

I like the way you look with a headband more than the hat, weird comment I'm aware lol

Myiic

There was nothing more shocking as a kid then Cena being rag dolled by Brock for 20 minutes

Kam

Nah super cena is 2005 to 2014, ended with him being destroyed by brock lesnar summerslam 2014, this is post super cena

Optilliam

Gallows Anderson & AJ ran together in New Japan under Bullet Club so they’ve been together a little bit longer before this

🙇🏾‍♂️

First one here. Can't wait to watch.
