Still a relatively rare match type for many of the reasons you mentioned, but they happen from time to time.

2024-06-25 18:50:38 +0000 UTCThe Dynamite Diamond Ring is a sort of championship ring MJF originally won in a Battle Royal in 2019. Every year they hold another battle royal and the winner gets to face MJF for the ring, but he's defended it every year. He uses the ring as a weapon so often that it's basically become his finisher, similar to Logan Paul and the brass knucks. Wardlow was MJF's hired bodyguard at the time, and his kayfabe AEW contract meant that pretty much all of his earnings went to Max, and their storyline was essentially what Gable and Otis is now, with Max constantly pushing him around, calling him a loser when all his losses were essentially Max's fault anyway, and always asking him to bring the ring out. During the Punk feud especially Max would berate Wardlow because Punk and Wardlow had a match that Wardlow would have easily won, (he hit Punk with like 6 powerbombs in a row) but Max kept telling him to hit him again, until Punk rolled him up. Him turning on him here then led to a Wardlow v MJF feud that *should* have positioned Wardlow as one of the top faces in the company, but they somehow managed to screw it up.

Some examples in Mid South in 1983 JYD and Butch Reed had one and in the same year at NWA Starrcade Roddy Piper had one vs Greg Valentine. This was when MJF was at his full heel self no one better at that in AEW. He was heel up until summer of 2023 and that kind of made me disinterested when he turned babyface. Hopefully this new run he's got a plan to get all of those fans who really liked him 2 years ago back. He's come out and done a few things and whilst he's entertaining as hell Im still a bit wary. I don't know next week if he's gonna start crying into someone shoulder about his anxiety and how he will die for AEW in the ring. We've had too much of that already people are sick of that kind of thing.

2024-06-25 17:51:00 +0000 UTCTo answer a couple questions the ring announcer Justin Roberts did work for wwe from 2002 - 2014. He's been with AEW since they started in 2019. To my knowledge WWE has never done a dog collar match but it's not a match type AEW invented either. I don't know when the first dog collar watch was but they have been done by many promotions going all the way back to at least the 80's as a way to settle the most heated of feuds.
