You’ll definitely need a companion piece for any of these docs such as the “death of wcw” book. But in the end it was less biased than the wwe ones on wcw

2024-06-23 21:15:21 +0000 UTCThis is really really long so my apologies in advance: The thing that was so shite about this was Nash and the Wolfpack were really popular babyfaces and were cool as shit (except for Lex Luger, the blonde guy who ran down to help Goldberg only to then attack him too) while Hogan’s nWo Hollywood were considerably less cool. This match led to the Wolfpack and nWo Hollywood reuniting. You may have heard of Goldberg’s Streak, where he won 170 matches in a row. Nash defeated Goldberg eight days prior to this match at Starrcade, WCWs biggest show of the year, when Scott Hall (the guy that came out with Nash) used the cattle prod on Goldberg allowing Nash to hit his finisher the Jackknife Powerbomb and win. It felt cathartic when Goldberg won the title because he was this phenomenon that came in, wrecked people and won. Then he loses in such a shit way and then the guy that beats him loses in an even shittier way to Hogan of all people. . Nash and Hall (who were shoot best friends) had jumped to WCW from the WWF in mid 1996, formed the nWo with Hogan, been multi time tag champions and then become estranged when Hall turned on Nash to join nWo Hollywood. So Hall helping Nash win the WCW Title made absolutely no sense. The two nWo groups had feuded but also not feuded, for months before this. Like Wolfpack member Sting feuded with Hollywood “recruiter” Bret Hart, Nash and Hall had feuded and Wolfpack cofounder Randy Savage had feuded with Hogan, which led to the split in the first place, but the groups also feuded with other people outside of the other nWo faction. So Nash losing to Hogan also made absolutely no sense because they had been “feuding” for months. The reason this is so controversial is because the Wolfpack was something different and fresh while Hollywood was the same thing fans had been watching for two and a half years by that point. Hogan’s idea of the nWo had gotten stale because it never changed. Hogan had held the belt for 359 days from Hog Wild in August 96 to Nitro’s 100th episode in August 97 where he lost it to Luger, only to win it back five days later at the renamed Road Wild. Hogan then held the belt until December where he lost to Sting in controversial fashion, which is a match and topic for another time. The belt was vacated, Sting then won it back, Randy Savage then won it, Hogan then beat Savage for it and held it until early July where Goldberg beat him for it. Fans didn’t get much of a break from Hogan as Champion. So Hogan winning the belt again here, as well as the nWo become one big heel super group again, turned fans off WCW. Hogan matches were also quite often, really fucking boring, especially heel Hogan matches, which is also probably a factor in people tuning out.

Monday Nitro and Monday Night Raw were on at the same time and day which was considered the Monday night war for ratings. This was the turning point in the Monday night wars because it was the first episode wwe actually beat WCW in the Monday Night Wars and this one single bad booking decision led to the demise of WCW two years later when they filed for bankruptcy in 2001 and were bought by Vince McMahon. That's why WCW is on WWE Network, because WWE owns the rights to the full WCW library.

But then again, it seem like I am the only one who enjojed this "match". WCW was my favourite promotion growing up and I especially enjoyed watching the NWO faction beating Goldberg up, like in this case. Because I watched it on german TV I originally did not hear the announcers talk about Mick Foleys title win on RAW.

2024-06-21 22:01:22 +0000 UTCWCW went to war backed by Ted Turner by debuting a live Monday night show that aired the same time as Raw with the intent of putting WWE out of business. They hit a really hot storyline with ex WWE guys Hall and Nash crashing Monday Nitro and joining with Hulk Hogan who had gone to WCW a few years before to form the NWO saying without saying that they were sent by WWE to invade. Led to something like 83 straight weeks where WWE was actually beaten by WCW in the ratings. WWE facing being put out of business (this was before Vince was a Billionaire.) WWE was forced to change up what they were doing to survive leading way to the attitude era where momentum finally swung back in WWEs favor. By 1999 WWE was firing on all cylinders and well you saw what WCW was doing. This leads to WCW being the one put out of business and ultimately bought by WWE in 2001. Thats why its called the Monday Night Wars it was a war for survival by two companies trying to put each other out of business. WWE has a documentary about it on Peacock. Might be a little WWE positive but hey history is written by the victor.

Ironically, him saying that caused over 600000 viewers of Monday Nitro to switch the channel to see Mick win the big one. That's why Schiavone kept repeating over and over that Nitro was live, because they're petty losers who'd fucked themselves over by telling their own audience that what WWE would show later in the night was something people genuinely wanted to see, and their main event was something no one wanted, but hey at least theirs was happening live!

2024-06-21 21:48:55 +0000 UTCOther people will go into plenty of detail about why this is the stupidest shit to ever happen in wrestling, but if you want just a quick overview of the actual "story" here, the NWO was a faction that formed when Hulk Hogan went to WCW and turned heel, aligning with Kevin Nash and Scott Hall (The other guy in red who came out with Nash). Eventually the NWO added like 40 members to the point where most of the roster were basically in it, so they split it into two, the heel NWO Hollywood (Or NWO Black and White), led by Hogan, and NWO Wolfpack, led by Hall and Nash, who were more babyface. Nash laying down for Hogan was the NWO coming back together to be one huge faction again, and all the guys who come in one by one and turn heel on Goldberg were either Hollywood or Wolfpack, and were now just NWO. It was really dumb.

The incident occurred during the main event of Nitro, featuring WCW World Heavyweight Champion Kevin Nash, who was the leader of the Wolfpac faction of the New World Order (nWo), and Hollywood Hogan, the leader of the Hollywood faction of the nWo, with whom Nash and his group had been feuding since April 1998 when the original faction split up and Hogan had retired from wrestling. The Wolfpac faction were babyfaces (heroes) while the Hollywood faction were heels (villains), as was the original nWo. The match saw Hogan poke Nash in the chest with his index finger, prompting Nash to theatrically throw himself onto the mat and allow Hogan to pin him; the victory marked the reunion of both nWo factions into one villainous group. Earlier in the same broadcast, WCW announcer Tony Schiavone gave away the results of their Monday Night War rival World Wrestling Federation (WWF)'s Raw Is War (which was taped six days earlier, and aired from tape at the same time Nitro was being aired live), revealing that former WCW wrestler Mick Foley was set to win the WWF Championship. Although this revelation was meant to deter Nitro viewers from switching to Raw Is War, it instead reportedly prompted 600,000 viewers to change channels in order to see Foley's victory, with most viewers only tuning back in to Nitro when there were five minutes left in the broadcast, in which the Fingerpoke of Doom occurred.
