In terms of lines that they've crossed on the serious side is for instance Vince McMahon had Randy Orton go out in 2006 and tell Rey Mysterio who was friends with Eddie Guerrero that Eddie was not in heaven, that he was in hell. That was probably the biggest line I've seen crossed because they used Eddie's actual death in a negative way which I do not agree with.

From what I’ve heard from people like Bret Hart and Jim Cornette the internet and just the more widespreading of information is what killed kayfabe. Up until the 80s and early 90s especially in the south kayfabe was kept to the fullest. Whatever your character was that’s who you were. In Mid South the promoter Bill Watts had a legitimate rule that if you were a wrestler in his territory and you went to a bar and got into a fight and lost that fight you were fired. His thinking was my wrestlers should be the toughest and baddest guys walking if you can get whipped by some guy at the bar and that word gets around that my wrestlers aren’t tough that hurts my business.
