I love Mike Tenay. His chemistry and commentary with Don West was fantastic.

2024-08-26 03:18:25 +0000 UTCThe great thing about this match is that often times with this style, you’d see many botches. Every huge move Rey hit was crisp and flawless. Eddie played his heel role to perfection but also hit some cool moves and counters. Many of the moves innovated here are used on a weekly basis now. I don’t think we get 3 Amigos until Eddie gets to WWE though.
Big Ell
2024-08-26 03:16:40 +0000 UTCYeah. Without knowing it, you watched two matches in a row with Mike Tenay on commentary. In TNA, Tenay was lead PBP and on this match, he’s the announcer who kept talking about luchadors and their history. He’d be brought on every PPV and Nitro for this specific purpose for random luchador matches.

2024-08-26 03:12:20 +0000 UTCRey did lose his mask at one point but when he came to WWE he had it again.

2024-06-25 18:15:19 +0000 UTCThere's a few good Eddie matches I would recommend. First off is Eddie Vs. Kurt Angle at Wrestlemania 20 and the second is another Eddie Vs. Rey Mysterio Match at SummerSlam 2005 where it was a ladder match for the custody of Rey Mysterio.
Chad
2024-06-20 03:06:19 +0000 UTCYeah the ones you don’t like are rest holds. Generally, most matches do end in pinfall. But it’s still required viewing for you to see a Kurt Angle match at some point because he was incredible and a fucking machine. Oh, and the hullabaloo about the ring having the Prime logo on it is because WWE has never had sponsors on the ring canvas. As obvious from this match, WCW did, with Slim Jims being the sponsor for Halloween Havoc for a few years. WCW got the Slim Jims sponsorship because of Randy Savage.
Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett
2024-05-22 18:18:43 +0000 UTCI definitely think they CAN be good. Based on what others have been saying it sounds like it's the holds where they're catching their breath that I wasn't a fan of. (I didn't know that's what they were doing lol)

2024-05-22 18:17:21 +0000 UTCIf you want a match to convince you submissions can be good, we better get you onto a Kurt Angle match.
Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett
2024-05-22 18:04:54 +0000 UTCAlso, for good submission matches, Bret Hart vs Austin at WM13, and Taker vs HHH at WM27
SayrenTV
2024-05-19 13:09:09 +0000 UTCin terms of different kind of matches, one of my all time favorites is the triple tag team TLC match at WM17, with Edge/Christian, vs The Hardyz, vs the Dudleyz. One of the best tag matches ever, and one I show to get people into wrestling
SayrenTV
2024-05-19 12:58:21 +0000 UTCThis is actually a great point. Heels specifically avoid moves that make the crowd go ooh and ahh and tend to keep their opponents grounded. It adds to the face's comeback and flurry of eye catching offense. That's "wrestling psychology" if you've ever heard the term. Roman never used submissions when he was a good guy. As soon as he turned heel, he started finishing people w the guillotine choke. Adds to the drama when a face is able to get out of it
Nate Cruz
2024-05-18 21:36:40 +0000 UTCI didn't even consider heels using submissions more.
Dport
2024-05-18 15:26:40 +0000 UTCFirst off, keep doing the pauses and tangents. A good reaction video, in my opinion, uses pauses well to provide a breakdown of thoughts in the moment. So keep at it; you're one of the better ones at this from what I've seen. This was my first time watching this match, and to be honest, I'm impressed. It doesn't look all that different from modern-day matches. Maybe even better than most, which shows how much chemistry these two have. I started watching wrestling back in '03/'04, so I missed out on all the WCW and Attitude Era stuff. But that just shows how timeless and relevant Lucha Libre is—Mexico's self-developed style of wrestling involving masks, high-flying maneuvers, and wrestling families, among other things. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think a common trope in wrestling is that if you're a Heel, your moves and matches usually involve submission holds, dirty tricks, and being more reserved and "boring" with your moves. This makes the Face look more honorable when they win with an explosive finisher or sheer grit. So, I think the initial dislike of submissions comes from that mindset. But there have been instances where a Face uses submissions as a main move, and those wrestlers tend to be very gifted or have an extensive background in grappling, like Bret and Owen Hart, Daniel Bryan, Kurt Angle, Zack Sabre Jr., and Eddie Guerrero.

2024-05-18 15:25:17 +0000 UTCIf you want to watch more Eddie then any of his watches against Kurt angle are worthwhile. Also Eddie vs Brock lesnar at no way out (2003 I think but it might be 2004)

2024-05-18 02:53:23 +0000 UTCyou gotta see Kota Ibushi vs. El Generico vs. Nick Jackson vs. Jigsaw for Chikara (a now retired wrestling promotion) its some of the best high flying work ive ever seen, classic masked sami zayn

2024-05-17 02:38:37 +0000 UTCI saw he was on the wikipedia as one of the commentators for the event but I didn't remember hearing his voice so I thought maybe Tenay replaced him for this match. I must have been mistaken.

2024-05-16 07:28:22 +0000 UTCAlso to answer the Kayfabe question, no it had been dead for a long time. The 70s might have been the last time it was protected but I’d say even by then a lot of people knew it was scripted. By the 90s, kayfabe was completely gone. Actually the term “sports entertainment” was created to pretty much tell everyone that it wasn’t real. Vince started calling it this after he couldn’t run in certain states without having to deal with commissions like MMA and boxing have to. So he pretty much stated it was entertainment to not deal with them anymore.

2024-05-16 06:12:46 +0000 UTCI would seriously consider watching some of the documentaries wwe has put out. Specifically the Monday night wars one or the rise and fall of wcw. They should provide context about what wcw was. You can even do it as a watch along down the line.
David
2024-05-16 05:58:43 +0000 UTCAlso, you should check out the Monday Night Wars documentary series on Peacock. Great series that gives ya the full history on the attitude era and the battle between WWF and WCW

2024-05-16 05:38:38 +0000 UTCYou oughta just go one more year with the Taker matches and watch his match vs Punk at Mania 29. Very good match
Kam
2024-05-16 05:33:44 +0000 UTCTo add context on why the mask vs. title thing is important, in Mexican wrestling, the mask is very important and the anonymity of wrestlers is very important, to the point where wrestlers are rarely seen in public without their masks. Lucha de apuestas (fight of bets) is a very high stakes match where the wrestlers put something valuable on the line and they really are seen as very important matches. The most common types of these matches are title vs mask, mask vs mask, mask vs hair, and hair vs hair. There are also some where careers are on the line but I consider those to be more rare and to fit into their own categorization. WWE has done a few of these style of matches but they are much more common in lucha libre than in other styles. Rey would actually eventually lose his mask in a match teaming with Konnan against Scott Hall and Kevin Nash in WCW but he began wearing it again after he debuted in WWE. Eddie is one of my favorite wrestlers of all time. He was working a very deliberately slow heel style in this match. In addition to being a great heel, he was an amazing babyface. I would suggest watching some of his 2004-05 run. It is phenomenal. Also, one of the reasons I believe he looks so big here is he was probably on steroids. He had a lot of drug and alcohol problems earlier in his career and I would imagine that included steroids. Almost everyone was on them at the time. In regards to the finish of the match, Rey's finisher at the time was the west coast pop, which was a springboard hurricanrana. This could be considered just an elevated version of the move like you would see finish a match today. Eddie's finisher is actually the frog splash, which he used in tribute to his late tag partner Art Barr. The main reason a lot of wrestlers, such as Rey and Dom, use the frog splash today is in tribute to Eddie. In reference to the commentary not really knowing how to call the match, it's because the style was rather new in the states. The commentators are Bobby Heenan (a legendary wrestler known for his work alongside Gorilla Monsoon), Dusty Rhodes (Cody's father), and Mike Tenay, who would go on to work for TNA and was one of the most knowledgeable commentators about the style at the time. That's why you kinda hear him take the lead to call spots. It was great to watch you watch this match. Sorry for the super long comment but I like talking about this kind of stuff, especially if I can help educate.

2024-05-16 04:04:24 +0000 UTCI don't mind the pauses or rewinds. I've seen most of these matches, so it's just fun to see your reactions. At this time, WCW was WWEs biggest competition. WWE later bought out WCW and all their PPV names and video library. Vince hated logos on the mats, but WCW was all about it. I don't get the freak out about the ads personally. Rey was the nephew of the original Rey Mysterio, which is why he went by Jr in WCW. But Vince hates Jrs (probably because he's a Jr) so he took it off when he got to WWE. "Lucha" means wrestling in Spanish. Lucha Libre means freestyle wrestling and is associated with Mexico. It's that high flying, flipping style of wrestling, and it's tradition for Luchadors to wear masks, they're very sacred in their culture. Watch a Zack Saber Jr match if you wanna get into submission wrestling lol. As far as Eddie, he had SO many amazing matches. I recommend NOT starting w his match against Brock Lesnar. Save that for down the road, cuz lots of context on Eddie's career is needed. Sorry for the long comment, trying to answer all your questions lol

2024-05-16 02:00:50 +0000 UTCThe adds in the ring was a wcw thing, the prime thing was new for wwe, and wcw was wwes competition in the 90s

2024-05-16 01:01:46 +0000 UTCI’m fine with the pausing also I won’t mind if you went into more depth after and gave more thoughts and opinions on the match but I love these because has a long time wrestleing fan it’s so interesting to see a new fan react to these match’s you haven’t seen

2024-05-16 00:26:06 +0000 UTCI think it wold still be cool to see you react to stone cold vs bret hart. Even if you know what happens it's still such a pivotal match in wrestling history it's still worth a watch. Also since you don't know much about WCW yet maybe consider reacting to some youtube videos talking about the monday night wars. There are tons of documentary style videos going over that era

2024-05-15 23:07:16 +0000 UTCAlways love watching this match. Eddie was my favorite wrestler as a kid and is the reason I got into wrestling in the first place his style of wrestling instantly hooked me. His passing was one the the saddest days of my childhood turning on smackdown and hearing the news of his death is a moment that I will never forget

2024-05-15 22:26:16 +0000 UTCAlso side note Rey did wrestle without a mask in WCW for a bit later on.

2024-05-15 21:15:57 +0000 UTCThanks for checking out this match, Rey is my childhood favorite! Rey Jr is the nephew of Rey Sr, a legend in mexico but Rey popularized Lucha outside of Mexico through his work in WWE and WCW before that. He and Eddie are tied together forever in wrestling history, they faced many times, even once in a ladder match for custody of Dominik, and when Eddie shockingly passed Rey was obviously very affected. Rey got a push after that in Eddie's honor but imo they never pushed him as high as they could have. Absolute legends and Dom is the continuation of their story. The whole Rhea Mami thing is the same gimmick Eddie had with Chyna back in the day. I cant wait for him to fully grow into mixture of Guerrero [Lie, Cheat, Steal] and Mysterio [Crazy high flying innovator.] When he gets him mask from Rey one day I will cry for sure.

2024-05-15 21:06:53 +0000 UTCKayfabe, was dead at this point. Eddie is in my top 3 fav wrestlers.I would watch Eddie vs Brock no way out 2004, or Eddie vs Kurt Angle Wrestlemania 20. I also don't mind the pausing. I do think themes for the type of match would be nice. It would be cool to do a bad match category.

2024-05-15 20:40:51 +0000 UTCMade these comments as you asked questions, I can see both sides for wanting to pause and wanting to keep the flow of the match going, I think breaks to break things down and give more opinions would be best though. WCW was bought by WWE in 2001, for the later half of the 90s they were WWE biggest compition and for a long time were beating them and putting on a much better product, then TRULY UNWATCHABLE booking started and I can not stress how unwatchable any WCW show is from 2000 or 2001. Dom and Rhea is 100% based on the pairing of Chyna & Eddie. Vince didn't like the title "Jr" in wrestlers names so took it from Rey when he went to WWE but family legacy is a huge deal in lucha libre culture. Lucha Libre is the wrestling style of Mexico, wrestlers say that going from Lucha to other styles is like learning a new language. Zack Sabre Jr & Bryan Danielson are the best technical wrestlers, their matches from the past 2 matches are the best showcase of modern submission wrestling you will see.

2024-05-15 20:40:14 +0000 UTCHey do u like submission finishers but not submission holds where the person ain't gonna tap and it like a holding spot to take few breaths say like a Chinlock or atomic stretch
Ryan Evans
2024-05-15 20:31:28 +0000 UTCAt the time, WCW and WWE were rivals as the two major national promotions; WCW wouldn't get bought out until 2001
prototype27
2024-05-15 20:26:38 +0000 UTCOh funny you say WCW being a part of WWE. WCW was actually legitimately a competitor to WWE that Vince ended up buying. Think of it like AEW and TNA are now. Except for a period of time WWE was actually losing the ratings war with WCW and it seemed more likely WWE would go out of business long before WCW would. So long story short during the time of this match WCW was its own thing entirely.

2024-05-15 20:25:12 +0000 UTCI think pausing is never a problem as long as you rewind a bit before resuming so you don't accidentally pause halfway through an important moment or important bit of commentary and end up missing it ^^ At least that's my perspective.
