Gassy Streets Episode 2

Here's something that happens more often than I'd like to admit. I start paintings over from scratch. I had a wave of freelance work come in and I put this painting aside for a week or so. All the momentum I had and all the mental notes I had in my head on what to work on next in the painting had disappeared when I got back to working on this piece. When that happens, I tend to start from scratch all over again.

This is about as far as I got with the previous drawing before I scrapped it. The colors I wanted just weren't happening and I found myself painting into a corner over and over again. I had forgotten that for more diffuse light schemes like I was planning on using for this piece, I have to rely more on the drawing to bring out textures and contrast. After a few failed attempts to save the drawing, I just cut it up and turned it into a texture I drew on top of (you might be able to see hints of the old painting if you look closely)

Re-starting allowed me to tackle a few issues I had with the piece, so I'm liking where things are going now. It was hard to see the expressions of the characters, so I scaled everything down and zoomed the camera in closer, and I started with a base layer that is much darker and with more texture which should give all that concrete some more grit to it.

Anyway, I'll be posting more progress soon!
